At work, I was on cruise control, blankly banging out scripts.

I would have congratulated myself on a job well done, if Will didn’t keep walking by obviously trying to ignore me. I was humiliated. I’d reached out with the sticky, and he chose to disregard it. Having Will ignore me on top of Kelvin throwing Kim in my face was more than even I, as numb to pain as I already was, could ignore.

I took a break around 2:00 a.m. and went to get a cookie. Most days, believe it or not, I still attempted Sheila’s rules. Well, the one I liked about splitting dessert—but rejected-fat-girl moments were an exception.

I walked into the cafeteria where the cookies and cakes lay near the fruit cups and salads. I guessed they were placed side-by-side so those that felt guilt could resist temptation and grab the fruit instead.

Before Sheila, the closest I came to reaching for a vegetable was when I was grabbing carrot cake, and why was Sheila so strong on the brain tonight, anyway? She wasn’t around anymore to hold me accountable, so who cared?

Still, I stood there, my hand floating near the cookie, but I couldn’t bring myself to grab it. It would be the last thing; it would be admitting defeat. As long as I followed this last rule of hers, I could convince myself I didn’t fail therapy. I was only taking a break and would go back one day. My hand floated to the fruit cups, but I couldn’t grab those either; it just wouldn’t satisfy the deep hunger that wasn’t in my mouth.

So, I stood there hovering between the gigantic-sized chocolate chip cookies and the fresh mixed fruit cups with grapes, cantaloupe, dewberry melons, strawberries, and pineapple chunks. I could get both, but then I knew I’d eat the cookie and throw the fruit away. Who am I fooling?

“It’s not hard. Get both, if you want.”

My head whipped over to Will, standing next to me.

“It is to me.” I admitted, embarrassed. “I’m trying to eat fruit whenever I feel the need to indulge my sweet tooth.”

“What makes tonight any different?”

“The level of stress.”

“Grab the fruit. It sounds to me like all you need is to talk through whatever’s bothering you.”

“Right. I’ll go call up my hundreds of friends and have a powwow.”

He looked chagrined. “I crossed the line. I pushed you somewhere you weren’t ready or willing to go. That doesn’t mean we can’t be friends. Besides, pretending to ignore you is stress I don’t need.”

I smiled and grabbed the fruit. “Okay. Let’s talk.”

He smiled, took my fruit, grabbed a chicken salad, two bottles of water, and went to pay the attendant, while I grabbed forks, his favorite salad dressing, and a table. We talked for nearly twenty minutes. An extremely long break at one of the busiest twenty-four-hour cable news stations, but when we were done it was like we’d never argued…and the flirtation and long eye glances were back too.
